Proposal for “My Fabulous Coursework”

Authors: Me, Myself and I

For my Foundation Portfolio coursework I have selected Brief X to complete and I shall be working alone to complete all elements of the work.

PASTE in Brief X

I/we have selected Brief ‘X’ because… (review your decision-making processes; what did you do to decide, rejecting and accepting brief on what basis; what you understand that your chosen)

After close study of the Brief it became clear that there were a number of elements to consider/prepare……

In order to create a convincing set of products I began a course of primary research.

Firstly, I …. (general overview of products & genre)

Secondly, I selected a small group of key texts for closer analysis under the headings of: format; content; style; audience; representation and institution

This research process proved useful because …explain how this has made you better informed and prepared you

From my research findings I have established the general codes and conventions for each product to be: format; content; style; audience; representation and institution ....discuss general similarities and differences in each category (refer to analysis grids)

My concept:

Having completed my research I have conceived my own range of products: format; content; style; audience; representation and institution ...pitch a detailed description of your intended product using al the categories and critical vocabulary

Research Grids

Production Research

Following your Initial Proposal you will have identified a minimum of 3 texts for EACH product.

The next job is to produce evidence of detailed, in-depth research.

We are doing this to:
  • produce evidence for assessment
  • ensure that you fully understand the nature of the product that you are planning to create
  • to collate the information needed for your FULL PROPOSAL
Access 'Practical Production Research' on school network: Pupilshare/AS Media2010_11 / G321 / research

Produce ONE grid for EACH element of EACH text

Initial Proposal

Purpose: to decide upon the Brief you wish to complete and plan the next stage of research

After having considered ALL 4 Briefs thoughtfully you will have:
• formulated a shortlist of options
• undertaken some basic research into the viability of the Brief
• undertaken some basic research (form, content, style) into the nature of each of the elements of production

The next stage is to plan the work you will need to do in advance of the production stage:
• Select a range (minm. 3) of real texts to deconstruct for each of the production elements
• Identify any technical elements that need to be researched/experimented with

In this initial proposal you must:

• State clearly the brief you wish to complete
• Explain why you have selected this brief
• Explain what each of the elements of your selected brief will involve
• Discuss your initial thoughts about the genre/content/style – what you plan to make?
• Identify (name) your key texts (minm. 3) to be studied for research analysis
• Identify any areas for technical research/experimentation
• Create a timetable (tasks & completion dates) for your research and experimentation

THIS DOCUMENT WILL FORM PART OF YOUR FINAL ASSESSMENT

Evaluation of Productions

The G321 Foundation Portfolio requires you to produce 2 linked products and write an evaluation.

Below are the prompt questions to be covered in your final written Evaluation:

In the evaluation the following questions must be answered:

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Who would be the audience for your media product?

How did you attract/address your audience?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The production element and presentation of research and planning may be individual or group work (maximum group size is four candidates). Where candidates have worked in a group, the evidence for assessment may be presented collectively but centres will still assess candidates on an individual basis for their contribution to aspects of the work, from planning, research and production to evaluation.

You must therefore begin to write an evaluation of your magazine cover.

Preliminary Magazine Cover

Deadline: Friday 1st October

TASK: complete the layout and design of your school/college magazine front cover.

You must include:
  • a title (not Harrodian Eye)
  • logo - optional
  • cover story & picture
  • issue number & date
  • 'sell lines' for at least 2 more stories
  • other pictures - optional
You need to have a clear vision of your target audience (profile) as the accompanying Evaluation (to be written next week) will seek to explain and justify your decision making when constructing the cover.

Textual Analysis

Homework - due Monday 20th , post it on your blog

1. Type up the 2 tables for i) Mise-en-scene and ii) Technical construction

2. Use the tables to write a detailed analysis of the Moet advert.
In the analysis you must offer an informed reading of the text, ie what it are the messages and how have they been constructed?

You can choose to either:
i) write it as continuous prose (but make sure you cover ALL the bases)
ii) write 1 paragraph for each of the criteria

In addition, should you not have finished the work from class, you must finish the audience profile. TRY to use some of the technical construction analysis in the evidence for your audience profile.
